Introduction (1/2)

Hello and welcome to this course!

We are very glad that you found your way to this course! During the following weeks, you will encounter a lot of exciting and interesting facts, videos, podcasts, and case studies about performance management in teams.

Learning Objectives

After completing the course, you will ...
  • ... know and understand psychological theories of (work-related) motivation
  • ... know and understand methods and techniques of performance measurement and performance feedback in work groups
  • ... gain a deeper understanding of result and process indicators in organizations
  • ... know and understand the management method ProMES for implementing performance measurement systems and feedback systems in organizations, especially in work groups
  • ... be able to develop ProMES systems in practice as a facilitator

Course Structure

The course is separated into two main parts.

The first part consists of session 01 to 04. Session 01 focuses on theoretical and empirical models about motivation. These models are the cornerstones of a specific performance management system called ProMES.

ProMES stands for:
  • Pro: Productivity
  • M: Measurement and
  • E: Enhancement
  • S: System
In session 02 you will learn more about performance evaluation in general. Session 03 will give you profound insight to the ProMES methodology. Finally, you will learn how ProMES is applied in practice. We have put together a ProMES case study that you can follow over a series of online videos.

In the second part (sessions 05 to 09), you and a group of teammates will work on your own ProMES case study. We (your tutors) will put together the groups after Session 04. We will guide you through this process and will make sure that everybody is on board. Your task as a group will be to develop your own performance management system, based on the knowledge you have gained during the first part. For that purpose you will be invited to use a web based software called effecteev.

Before the course starts, you should make yourself comfortable with a few things:
  1. The course structure & timetable: We will recommend you a certain time structure to work on the course contents.
  2. List of assignments: It shows you when you are required to hand in certain assignments and how those components are graded.
  3. Technical specifications: They show you around the StudOn page.
  4. The forum: Here you can meet us and your fellow teammembers to communicate with each other and ask questions. We will post all necessary and current information into the forum. Please make sure to check it regularly.
  5. Our netiquette: Some rules how we should interact with each other.
  6. Last but not least: Get to know us and introduce yourself. Yes, this is an online course, but this does not mean that it should be anonymous. Please introduce yourself in the forum and find out who your tutors and teammates are.
