H5P

H5P
In StudOn it is possible to create interactive learning content using the free and open source software H5P and to integrate it both on course level (via the option "Design page") and in an ILIAS learning module. Nine H5P main elements have been released for use, thus offering a wide range of application and design possibilities. Lecturers are thus given the opportunity to make the learning modules of their courses more interactive and thus activate and motivate students.
No in-depth technical knowledge is required to integrate the elements. The integration via a plugin allows to design the elements directly from the respective page in an ILIAS learning module.
With the help of H5P, quizzes or interactive learning videos can be created for learning scenarios and used for teaching. The created content is based on HTML5 and behaves responsively.
For example, the H5P element "Interactive Video" can be used to enrich a video within a learning module with interactive elements. Learners are thus encouraged to interact with the learning content instead of simply consuming it. In addition, they are encouraged to deal with the content more intensively. Thanks to collage, image hotspots or image sliders, images can also be integrated more appealingly and interactively into the learning module.
To insert H5P elements into StudOn
First you create a learning module in StudOn. Click on the button "Add new object" in the area where you want to create the learning module and choose "Learning module ILIAS".
Switch to edit mode and click the "+" sign in the middle to add content. Select the "Insert H5P" option.
Create a title and select from the library the item you want to include in your learning module.
Once you have decided which element you want to include, you must define the properties of the element.
Click on "Add". In a few simple steps you have made your learning module more interactive.

The new elements are briefly described below:

The chart content type allows StudOn users to create pie charts and bar charts directly in an ILIAS learning module.
The collage content type allows you to set up multiple photos in a custom layout. Present your photos in a tasteful way.

Use the Collage tool to combine beautiful images into a didactically meaningful composition.

Choose from 11 layouts and configure them:
  • Image detail and zoom
  • Image distance (inner image size)
  • External frame size
  • Collage height
Drag and drop questions allow the learner to connect two or more elements and make logical connections visually.

Examples:
  • Group elements that belong together or have something in common.
  • Matching an object with another object
  • Putting elements in the right order
  • Placing elements in the right place
Drag and drop can be used to test the learner's knowledge of a particular subject as a change from multi-choice questions.

H5P Drag & Drop questions support multiple Drag & Drop zone combinations: one to one, one to many, one to one and one to many.

Drag & Drop questions can be used individually, but also in the Interactive Video element.
Hotspots can display text, images and videos when clicked.

The Image Hotspots content type allows you to place an overlay of hotspots on images and graphics. The user clicks the hotspots to display associated text.

Image hotspots can be useful for creating infographics quickly and easily. Use each image and enrich it with interesting points of interest and detailed information about the displayed details. The user is activated by interacting with the image.

The following is configurable:
  • The number of hotspots
  • The placement of the individual hotspots and the associated pop-up contents
  • The color of the hotspot
Present your images with ease in an appealing way. The authors only have to upload images and provide alternative text for the images.

The next two images are always pre-installed, so switching between images is usually quick and without delay for loading the next image.

Images can be viewed as part of the page or in full screen mode. When used as part of the page, the system selects a fixed aspect ratio depending on the images used. Authors can choose to handle the aspect ratio differently.
With the help of this tool you are able to create interactive timelines.
When do I use a timeline?

Timelines represent chronologically ordered events. Each event can be enriched with text, images and audio-visual files.

Timelines are used when you create a lesson that includes important milestones related to a topic. These can be displayed in a timeline in a very clear, visually attractive and user-friendly way.

Use timelines as an alternative to traditional milestone or time displays.

Dialogue cards can be used as exercises to help learners remember words, expressions or sentences. Dialogue Cards provide a prompt on one side of the card and a corresponding answer on the other side.

Dialogue Cards are often used in language teaching to practise words and expressions. Dialogue Cards can also be used to present mathematical problems or help learners remember facts such as historical events, formulas or names.

The following is configurable:
  • Fully reactive
  • Adding an image to a map
  • Adding audio to a map
  • Add tips
The question set (quiz content type) enables the learner to solve a sequence of different question types. You can combine many different question types such as multichoice, drag and drop, and space filling in one question set. As the author, there are many settings that you can use to define the quiz process.

You can also use the question set to add videos that play at the end. One video for success, another if the learner fails the test. This could motivate learners to try again if they fail so that they can see the video of success.
With an Interactive Video, you expand a video with various active elements. Learners interact with the video content by pausing and addressing the questions or comments. In this way, you direct learners' attention to certain aspects and prevent them from simply consuming. The learners are then not bound to relatively static learning content but are encouraged to deal with the content more intensively.

Interactive videos are also suitable for documentaries, explanatory videos or expert interviews.
