Potential topics
At the FAPS Institute, all currently available topics for student projects, as well as bachelor's and master's theses, are published in the corresponding section of our website. Since the official English version of our website includes only a fraction of the advertised topics, we recommend visiting the German version of our website, which can be automatically translated into your preferred language using Google Translate:
- German topic announcements: https://www.faps.fau.de/studium/studentische-arbeiten/
- English topic announcements (automatically translated, recommended for international students): https://www-faps-fau-de.translate.goog/studium/studentische-arbeiten/?_x_tr_sl=de&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=de&_x_tr_pto=wapp
(Unfortunately, the filter option does not work with Google Translate, but only in the original German version of the website.)
As the topics announced on our website pertain to different study programs and types of student work, not all are suitable for an AI-FAPS project. Generally, only topics with a clear AI focus and a significant amount of programming are eligible for AI-FAPS projects. Therefore, topics that only involve literature research and do not have a high proportion of programming cannot be credited as AI-FAPS projects. If in doubt, please consult the FAPS staff member listed for each topic to confirm whether their topic would be suitable for a 10-ECTS AI project in terms of content and scope.
Application procedure
If you have identified a few AI topics that seem suitable for a 10-ECTS AI-FAPS project, apply by emailing the specified FAPS staff member directly. In your email, clearly state that you are applying for a 10-ECTS project as part of the AI-FAPS module to avoid confusion with project theses from other study programs that have a different focus and scope (e.g., the 15-ECTS project for ACES and mechanical engineering students). Additionally, briefly explain your motivation for the chosen topic and attach your current CV and academic transcript to give the FAPS staff member a complete understanding of your background and interests. Since many of the topic announcements are kept quite general, a suitable AI-FAPS project topic can often be developed through direct communication with the respective staff member, during which the specific AI techniques and datasets to be used are also determined.
Important note for students of the AI program who have to do two projects during their studies: The AI-FAPS project can be selected as either "Project I" or "Project II" and is assigned to the "AI Systems and Applications" pillar due to its strong application focus. According to the examination regulations, your two projects must belong to different pillars. If you have already completed another project at a different institute or plan to do one in parallel with the AI-FAPS project, ensure that the pillars are different. Accordingly, it is also not possible to receive credit for two AI-FAPS projects, as both would fall under the same pillar.
If you have any questions or encounter difficulties with the application, you may contact Andreas Mayr (andreas.mayr@faps.fau.de), who is responsible for the AI-FAPS project module. We are always eager to find a suitable AI-FAPS project for every committed student, but unfortunately, we cannot accomodate every application due to limited capacity.
