Wiki
Wikis can be used everywhere where content is to be worked on together. Experience shows that students (but also lecturers) learn to use wikis in StudOn quite quickly. Therefore they can be used for teaching without a long preparation time. The following examples show basic application possibilities, which of course would have to be adapted to the respective department:
Use scenarios
  • Dr. Ebinger will conduct an internship on the topic of how quality controls can be carried out in a company. The students are to develop a common concept and organization for this purpose. They should then document their work appropriately.
  • Dr. Zenkel would like the students to create a glossary on the above-mentioned topics in addition to the course he is offering in order to deal with the contents in greater depth.
  • In the mechanical engineering seminar, routine procedures for environmental protection at Siemens are to be documented via a Wiki.
  • Due to the large number of participants in the seminar "General Medical Medicine", the students, divided into groups, should jointly write important results of their work.
  • In the seminar on the topic of "Conversation management", the conversations conducted for the exercise should be recorded. Suggestions for improvement should be collected from the students.
  • Wikis can also be used to replace slides. Instead of using PowerPoint to create slides, the content is created in a Wiki and students are asked to supplement this grid with their own notes from the lecture.
  • In a cross-university cooperation project on the topic of "Internet-based communication in history teaching", working groups from various universities are to jointly create a wiki on a given topic and reflect on the process again in a final presence phase.
  • For intercultural encounters, wikis will be created between selected cooperation partners. Each partner describes, for example, the welcome ritual in their country. At the end the wikis are presented and discussed in the respective partner institutions.
  • For an international research project, the partners are to gather certain information on a topic and process it into a uniform document.
Create a Wiki
Like forums and groups, the Wiki is set up using the green plus sign 'Add new object'.
Possible difficulties
The use of wikis in teaching is becoming increasingly popular. But simply providing a wiki is not enough to get students to write. The work process must be stimulated and supported and must be integrated meaningfully into the course in question. It is worth considering how students can be obliged to participate in the wiki process, for example by setting a fixed limit on how much they have to write or even by grading the articles they contribute. In any case, introductory events that demonstrate the use of a wiki and announce rules for its use are useful.
For some students, the fact that their work can be overwritten or deleted at any time creates a certain mistrust, so that they do not participate properly. Difficulties are caused by the task of dividing complex topics into articles or their links. This can cause difficulties, especially if previous knowledge differs. As with group and forum work, there are learners who have little team experience and who find it difficult to work together on content.
Wikis often require regular support from the teachers, which can be relatively time-consuming!
