Mediacast Podcast Vodcast
Mediacasts are used to offer media files on a regular basis, which can be subscribed to and downloaded by users via RSS feed, in the style of a podcast. These can be audio casts (pure audio pieces), slide casts (presentations with animations or additional audio track) or video casts (video files). Course members receive a message from the StudOn internal notification system on their desks when new content is available in a mediacast.
Below is a short step-by-step guide on how to add a media cast. You can find more information by accessing the context-sensitive online help via the "Help > Open Online Help" tab.
Step 1: Add new mediacast
- In your course, select "Mediacast" from the drop-down menu "Add new object" in the upper right corner.
- A new view will appear where you have to give your new mediacast a title and can add a description.
- Fill out the field and click on the button "Create Mediacast.
A view appears where you can define settings for the Mediacast object:
- Online: As long as this option remains disabled, users without editing rights to the object cannot yet access it.
- Downloadable objects: If this option is set, users can download the audio or video contributions directly from the ILIAS view of the mediacast.
- Extra web feed URL: This option creates a separate news feed URL for the item
Step 2: Upload media file
You are in edit mode for a media cast object (e.g. after creating it) and should now proceed as follows to make your first entry
- Switch to the "Content" tab; you will find an empty overview of the Mediacast entries there. Click on "Manage" here. By clicking "Add" at the bottom right, you will enter the creation mode of such a post.
- Now upload the corresponding file(s) and save.
Instead of uploading a file from your local computer, you can also specify the URL of an audio or video item located elsewhere on the Internet. In addition to the standard version of the audio or video element ILIAS offers separate options to specify versions for portable devices.
These can be subscribed to by the user e.g. in the iTunes application. It is also possible to create a preview image in .png, .jpeg or .jpg format for an entry, e.g. for a movie.

Step 3: Save and publish
ILIAS will then display the list of Mediacast contents that already contains your first entry and, if you have put the object "online", the content is now available for users without editing rights.
In the view "Manage" of the tab "Content" you can also see access statistics for single Mediacast entries: In the column "Properties" of an entry you will find a line "Played:" with the number of accesses.
